Between Water and Air – The Story of Daniel Bobrowski

Daniel Bobrowski is a man who lives at the intersection of the elements. Water, air, mountains – he feels at home everywhere. A former soldier in the airborne and special forces, a parachute instructor, an expert at the State Commission on Aircraft Accident Investigation, and a Total Immersion coach. It is hard to describe him in a single word. He combines military precision, athletic passion, and a big heart for working with people. How does it all come together? What does swimming give him? And what is his mission? This is his story.

Be water, my friend

Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water.

You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.

You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.

You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.

Now water can flow or it can crash.

Be water, my friend.

— Bruce Lee

These words by Bruce Lee have been an inspiration to me for years. They teach that it is not just about movement, but about awareness, flexibility, balance, and understanding your own body and mind. Water can flow or shatter a rock – it all depends on our intention and mindfulness. That is exactly how I work with people – teaching them not only swimming technique, but also a different approach to themselves and everything around us.

Between water and air – that is where I feel most like myself

In the air, balance matters. In the water – exactly the same. For years I jumped with a parachute. I trained and coached in wind tunnels. I ran through mountains. I learned composure, breathing, presence. And later – with the same precision – I discovered water. Today I know that “be like water” is not just a metaphor. It is a concrete skill – moving lightly, consciously, and with feel.

What prepared you for this?

I graduated from the Academy of Physical Education, where I studied anatomy, anthropomotorics, biophysics, and human physiology, among other subjects. I worked as a personal and medical trainer, combining knowledge from biomechanics, physiotherapy, and strength training. I was also an instructor of Krav Maga, the Israeli hand-to-hand combat system. All of this shaped my holistic approach to training and teaching swimming.

Where do you hold your classes?

I run adult swimming courses in Bielsko-Biala and in the Kashubia region, as well as Open Water swimming camps in various locations that are ideal for experiencing water in a natural environment.

And it all started with… an injury…

Where did the passion for swimming come from?

“It started in the army,” Daniel says. “Swimming was an alternative in fitness tests. After spinal injuries, I had to give up some activities for a while, and water became my safe space.” “Even though I swam fast, I always came out of the water exhausted. That feeling kept nagging at me. That is when I started looking for a solution.” The search for an efficient technique led him to the Total Immersion method. “When I found out that TI is also used by the Navy SEALs, I felt it was no coincidence. Their precision, composure, and technique of moving through water matched exactly what I had been looking for. It inspired me – and changed my approach to swimming forever.”

What were the beginnings with Total Immersion like?

– On American websites I found something that intrigued me. I searched for someone teaching this method in Poland – and I came across Pawel Lewicki. After a few attempts, we managed to get in touch and I went for the training. That was in 2018. Since then I have gone through all the stages – Level 0, 1, 2, Easy Speed, Open Water. And I fell in love with this method. Today I coach others myself.

How does Total Immersion differ from traditional swimming?

– Total Immersion is conscious, logical, energy-efficient swimming – Daniel explains. – It is a holistic approach. We do not just teach arm or leg movements. We teach moving the whole body in harmony with the water. It is like a dance or TaiChi – light, logical, natural. We learn as if assembling LEGO blocks – small elements that come together to form a whole. Not strength, but physics, balance, and mindfulness are the key. It is a method that is particularly friendly for adults – also ideal for those who want to start learning front crawl as beginners or overcome their fear of water.

What do your courses and camps for adults look like?

– We do not throw anyone in at the deep end – he says with a smile. – We start with simple exercises and focus points, which are the key to perfection. We build new neural connections, teaching the body correct movement patterns from scratch. Classes are in small groups, divided by level. The goal is for the student to understand their movement, not to follow mechanical commands.

Does military experience and parachuting help in working in the water?

– Absolutely. In a wind tunnel and during jumps, you learn balance, concentration, and relaxation – just like in water. Water and air have a similar density if you know how to move through them. It is incredible. That awareness carries over to every lesson I teach – I try to show my students how movement can be calm, conscious, and efficient.

What about fear? Are swimming and jumping only for the brave?

– Absolutely not. It is actually the people with fear who gain the most. I work with people who are afraid of water or heights. And you know what? All they need to do is trust me. Well, maybe also invite Newton and Archimedes into the water. We do the rest together, using the physical laws they described. I teach them breathing, calm, and composure. And then I watch them grow. That is the greatest reward for me.

What drives you every day?

Meeting people. Training in water, air, and mountains. I love watching how my students change not only physically, but also mentally.

Do you have any dreams?

– I have plenty of them, and lots of ideas still maturing in my head. Among other things, I want more people to understand that swimming does not have to be a struggle. For me, Total Immersion is not just a technique. It is a way of thinking and living.

The bumblebee anecdote sounds like your approach…

In my work I follow the Kaizen philosophy – small, daily steps that lead to great results. It is not about spectacular changes, but about consistency and awareness. This also reminds me of the bumblebee anecdote. According to the laws of aerodynamics, its wings are too small for it to fly – but it does not know that. It simply flies. And it is the same with us – as long as we do not talk ourselves into believing it cannot be done, we can discover things that once seemed impossible. Do not think about limitations. Just act.

What should we wish you then, Daniel?

Health and peace. But also… that the peace does not bore me – Daniel laughs. Because a little adrenaline does keep me well-preserved.
